How and when to obtain test results from the surgery

Results

Results can be accessed online via the NHS App. If this was not done when you set it up please speak to reception to arrange this.

Please do not call the surgery for your results, please message us online.

You will be advised at the time of your test which day to call, but please understand that delays do sometimes occur.

Test results can only be given to the patient concerned or any person that the patient has notified the practice has their permission to do so.

Tests

Fasting Patients

Your doctor has requested that you attend for a fasting blood test. This may be for glucose or lipid/cholesterol testing.

For these test to be performed you need to be nil by mouth overnight. This means that you should have:

  • No food or drink (except plain water) for up to 12 hours before the blood test
  • No Alcohol for 16hrs before the blood test
  • No smoking for 12hrs before the blood test.

You may continue to drink water during the fast but not more than the normal amount of fluid you would normally drink in that period. Please continue to take any prescribed medication with water only.

If you do not comply with this fasting period may result in negative results and the test will need to be repeated.

Diabetic Patients

If you are a diabetic patient on insulin, have your fasting blood test then take your insulin as usual with your breakfast.

If you are taking oral hypoglycaemic tablets, have your blood test and then take your tablet with your breakfast.

Carry your blood glucose meter in case you need to use it.

Because of the waiting period, it is advisable for you to bring in something to have to eat after your blood test.

Please follow any additional instructions that your doctor / nurse may have given you.
